The Problem of Introspection

‘The Problem of Introspection’ may perhaps give you the impression that we are putting off our mission of being a construction marketing blog and are on some psychological tangent.

However, the proper application of introspection is one of the greatest challenges that face all of us who are responsible for marketing construction businesses. Achieving the proper balance and measure of a company can be extraordinarily difficult.

How can we locate the external point through which we can perceive our companies attributes, our own particular set of strengths and weaknesses?

One very practical area of missed opportunities that can happen to all of us is a failure to make the most of a successful presentation. Ford Harding has written an excellent post ‘Who’s in your audience?’ that addresses this issue.

A post by Michael Stone, ‘Where’s your focus?’ describes a personal experience with hiring a self-absorbed contractor. In this case, the opportunity to literally be the customer provided Michael with a wonderful example of how not to do it.

With posts like these Ford and Michael can enable us to stand outside our own experiences and to critically examine the way we are and the way we do things. Insights from people who have been there and thought through the issues involved can allow us to gain the perspective we’re looking for. For our part, we’ve offered posts such as ‘5 steps to gain a clear business focus’.

We encourage anyone interested in construction marketing to try out a wide selection of blogs via an ‘RSS reader’. This is a piece of software that gets regularly updated by the blogs you sign-up for and presents the updated material in one place for easy reading. Here’s how the BBC describes RSS and how to use it. They mention a range of RSS readers (or as they tend to call them ‘News Readers’). We’re happy to recommend Bloglines.

Let the internet give you a fresh perspective and help you to connect with people who may have just the thing you need to read lined up for their next post.
